30 day song challenge: day 08 - a song that reminds you of somewhere

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RTl3HXK_NI

In Pohang there was this like little don katsu place in the shopping area that me and my comp would go eat at. It was pretty nice, little sit down place, reasonably priced. there were a lot of high school girls and dates taht would come in to eat there, and then us, the two twenty-something year old white guys in suits. The lady at the shop got to know us pretty well, actually, haha.

Anyway they would always play these ridiculous korean pop songs. I know a lot of them, but i never did find out the names really. My comp at the time was from Suwon near Seoul, so he knew a lot of the bands and stuff, and after the mission I was able to grab some goofy songs here and there. I really wish I could remember some of them... they were pretty much the only music i had for two years besides EFY and hymns.

30 day song challenge day 07: a song that reminds you of a certain event

John Mayer - Clarity

On my mission once there was this Busan stake music festival thing. It was apparently like a tradition that the stake president would ask the mission president to get the missionaries to make a little number. The year before (and I think the year before that too) the mission president told the missionaries to make a little "band".

Thus began one of the weirdest experiences of my mission. basically for like 3 P-days in a row we would get reimburssed to take the bus down to Busan and jam for like 5 hours. We listened to music, played like Led Zeppelin songs and just goofed off basically. But it was like Church-sanctioned Mission-President approved goofing off. President Song was a real hard-line, nose to the grindstone type of guy, so it was really odd. I remember him walking past while we were just kinda jamming to some pretty heavy guitar stuff and he just smiled and gave us a big thumbs-up.

Anyway, Geoff Cooper was the guy who spearheaded the whole thing. My MTC comp Ryan Holman was playing drums and he told Cooper I played bass so he got me to do it. Cooper is an amazing musician and a real big John Mayer fan so we played Clarity and Waiting on the World to Change. It kinda got me into John Mayer, before I had really just thought of him as some pop singer, but getting into the stuff and dissecting his music revealed a lot of complexity that i didn't realize before. Continuum helped a lot too, after I got home, it was a favorite album of mine for a while.

I wouldn't say it was the highlight of my mission, but it was definately an experience. In any case, we sounded pretty damn good.

30 day song challenge day 06: A song that you know all the words to

Hell Yes- Beck , Ghettochip Malfunction remix

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAmvp0JUA_Y

Beck is awesome. It has been my goal to memorize at least one of his songs because it's so hard! Eventually I did learn all the lyrics to this one, but man was it difficult. The song is sweet too, go take a listen.

30 day song challenge day 04 - a song that makes you sad

Eli the Barrow boy - The Decemberists

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jz7wKhVa_VE

I found out about the decemberists maybe about a year and a half ago and they've since become one of my favorite bands. The way they construct their songs and verses make it really vivid, they can really paint a picture and tell a story. They will probably have a few more songs on this list. Anyway, Eli the Barrow Boy is such a great song. It doesn't make me want to cry, but it's just so quiet and beautiful. Great lyrics, great words.

I briefly considered making a music video for this if I ever get a hold of a copy of flash. Maybe I'll storyboard one just for fun. You know, storyboard practice. I really wanted to do one on The Mariner's Revenge, but it's around 7 minutes long, so I figured this might be a good substitute since it's much shorter. If we ever have a flash project in my digital media class I'll see if I can do a decemberist song.

30 day song challege day 3 : a song that makes you happy.

Basically anything by Andrew Huang, the genius behind Songs to Wear Pants to. I could go on about how brilliant this guy is. Some of my favorites are:

I am the first fifty digits of pi.
Robot Pirates.
Touchtone Genius.
It's too loud. (this song was one where he wrote about the genre of music he liked least, in that style of that genre)
A rap song in which none of the letters contain the letter e.
superman is way better than spiderman.

I probably forgot a bunch too. Also I just got done listening to his latest one. Ninja Zombies.

Epic win.

30 day song challenge day 1: your favorite song

Another Day - Album Leaf

I am going to be doing the 30 day song challenge now. I figured I would post them here so I can have a nice little archive if only for my own sake, and so I can feel like writing up some more detailed things than on the facebook thing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjHrtwOQ6g4

day 01 is your favorite song. I chose "Another Day" by the Album Leaf. This song is really special to me, it's gotten me through some tough times. I'm not sure why. It's an extremely gorgeous song, and without lyrics there's no sense of trying to lead to anything. I think it's pure art. Plus it leads directly into "Streamside" which I think will probably make it ontu this list as well.

Because this song is so special, I actually very rarely listen to it. Maybe once a month or so. Or less.

I encourage you to listen to the whole song. And to do it the way I do when I listen to it - no distractions, turn off your lights, computer, whatever, and just let yourself think for the full 7 minutes. It's pretty invested, but you get a lot more out of it if you put more into it, you know?
